BoxBots VR is a 3v3 competitive VR arena combat game where you use spring-powered boxing gloves to jump pop and hit to move, defeat enemies, and score points! Pick from 3 classes to play as, Depth Strider: fast and mobile with extra long and springy Punchers, Heavy Duty: high-damage and can destroy walls with their Punchers, or Shield Caster: generate a shield on one hand that can block in-coming Punchers or be thrown to create platforms to jump off!
Originally pitched as a Beta vertical slice, BoxBots VR is a physics-driven, fully-networked for VR sport that contains elements from hero PVP games such as Overwatch that was developed by 6 people including myself for my Commercial Games Development Master's course. I primarily worked on the physics, developing the punchers, class swapping, and movement physics systems myself, as well as had a hand in the networking framework that allowed players to party up in lobbies, and match up against other teams when searching for online games.
This game truly developed my deep knowledge of multiplayer programming, due to the extra layers needed to program a successful networked VR avatar, and tested the networking on game objects via private and public networked rooms more than I had ever dabbled with before. The game utilises PhotonPUN2 networking and was toned down to a 2v2 mode that can be downloaded for testing today with a friend. Matches run for 5 minutes and whoever score the most points by popping their balloon (positioned on the opposite side of the arena) wins the match!
